Botox as an AntiAgingProduct.

'Botox' is the trade name for a type of neurotoxin called botulism toxin type A.  A neurotoxin is a chemical that inhibits muscle action by blocking the release of chemical mediators that act on the nerves supplying the muscles. There are at least six different types of Botulism toxin, produced by a type of bacterium called Clostridium botulism.

Clostridium botulism was discovered in food well over a hundred years ago.  The toxins are named from the Latin word 'botulus' which mean sausage.

The paralysis that results from food poisoning from Clostridium botulism infection gave scientists the idea to use the toxins carefully and selectively to release conditions of muscle spasm.  The first conditions to be treated were strabismus (where the eyes squint due to muscle imbalance) and blepharospasm (eyelid muscle spasm).

Botox is the trade name for an Allergan preparation of Type A Botulinum toxin, that blocks the release of the chemical acetylcholine from the motor nerve endings.  Botox results in a localized muscle weakness of partial paralysis that gradually reverses over time. Botox comes as a powder that must be reconstituted or mixed with saline to the proper unit dosage, and then injected into the designated muscle areas.

Botox is approved for the treatment of glabellar (forehead) frown lines--sometimes called 'the number 11' because of the two-line vertical appearance between the eyebrows. The effect is Botox is usually noticeable in a few days and may last up to four months. Botox is approved for healthy, non-pregnant patients, with no underlying neuromuscular disease or other contraindications, in persons age 18-65.

There are a number of potentially serious side effects from Botox including allergic reactions and rarely, more serious local paralysis or cardiovascular effects (rare deaths have been reported).

It is strongly recommended that you have only a very experienced health care provider perform the evaluation and administration of Botox. You should ask lots of questions such as:

What can I expect from Botox treatments?

How many Botox procedures do you do or have you done?

What kind of side effects can occur?

Allergan has an informative site regarding Botox, which you might want to review if you are considering treatment at http://www.botoxcosmetic.com/.
